On the fresh poetry of collage in drawings by Chris Meulemans
“There is a meaning of representation that has no equivalent in the universe of understanding, a perceptual context that is not yet the objective world, a perceptual being that is not yet a determined being.” Maurice Merleau-Ponty
Drawings by Chris Meulemans look multiform, fragmentary, concrete. All sorts of things are happening, there is much to see. At the same time, it is my impression that these works have to do with blindness, with the impossibility of (complete) overview or insight. It is that characteristic of Meulemans’ work and artistic practice that prompts me to initially scan some aspects of this oeuvre one by one with caution, even some hesitation.
